Find your National Insurance number

You can find your National Insurance number:

  • on a document you already have, for example a P60, payslip or letters about benefits
  • in your personal tax account
  • in the HMRC app
  • in your Apple or Google Wallet (if you’ve previously saved it there)

You can also use your personal tax account or HMRC app to download a letter that shows your National Insurance number.

You can use this service if you:

  • need to find your National Insurance number
  • know your number, but need it on a letter

You’ll need to sign in to use this service. If you do not already have sign in details, you’ll be able to create them.

Proving your identity to use this service

You’ll be told if you need to prove your identity when you sign in. This is to keep your details safe and normally involves using photo ID like a passport or driving licence.

If you cannot prove your identity, you may still be able to use the service to get a letter with your National Insurance number. HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) will post this to the address they have on record for you.

Other ways to get your National Insurance number

If you cannot find your National Insurance number on any of your documents or by using the online service, you can:

  • fill in form CA5403 online and post it to the address given at the end of the form
  • contact HMRC to get a letter confirming your National Insurance number - this can take up to 15 days to arrive

HMRC will not tell you your National Insurance number over the phone or on webchat.
